Hi! I'm so glad you've arrived at this blog dedicated to perfumes. I want to tell you a little more about who I am and where this crazy idea of dedicating myself to perfume reviews comes from.
Let’s start at the beginning; my name is Eduardo, I’m 39 years old, and I’m a proud Chilango. Since I was little, I’ve had a certain obsession with smelling everything (and when I say everything, I mean everything). From the smell of people’s clothes, how clean hands smell and how they smell when dirty, the scent of my grandparents’ house, and recognizing the unique smell of each of my uncles’ houses (I have 8 uncles). Everyone knew about my strong sense of smell, but they didn’t give it much importance until one day, my “skills” came in handy with food. I saved several family members from chronic diarrhea due to spoiled food. What’s curious is that when others smelled it, they couldn’t detect anything since it wasn’t the classic putrid smell that even someone with anosmia could detect. I’m talking about those subtle changes in the scent of chicken, milk, etc. At this point, you must be thinking I studied perfumery and followed my dream, right? The truth is, I didn’t, as life took me down other paths. I studied Industrial Engineering at Tec de Monterrey and started working as a consultant until I was invited to help build a financial startup. After 9 years and having reached the position of General Manager, I started remembering all the things I wanted to do as a kid (possibly due to a midlife crisis, ha ha ha). So today, at 36 years old, I’ve decided to focus on my passion, and the first step was creating this blog.
To be honest, I’ve been thinking about this project for over 3 years, but due to lack of time and, honestly, fear, I hadn’t dared to start it. As they say: better late than never.
Just like you don’t keep dressing the way you did when you were 15, why do you think your perfume should stay the same? There’s a perfume for every occasion and age.
There are too many perfumes on the market to commit to just one. Just like you don’t always order the same brand of beer or go to the same restaurant and order the same thing, you shouldn’t do that with perfumes. There are already things in life that force you to stick to one option, so why not diversify in other areas!
Contrary to what you might think, perfumes serve specific functions. Just like a linen suit is meant for summer heat, citrus and aquatic perfumes are too. That’s why it’s important to think about the situation you’re buying it for: is it for the office? For a night out at the club? There’s an option for every situation.
I get it; you love your jeans—they’re the most comfortable and you look cool in them. But that doesn’t mean you’ll wear them to a wedding. Clothes, like perfumes, have a time and place to be used.
The main idea behind the @myscentjourney account on Instagram was to leverage the fact that I’ve collected over 900 perfumes over time and could share my personal experience with each one. The concept was simple: post a photo of my collection every day and share my review in the comments. Easy, right? As I progressed on IG, I realized the content is virtually ‘perishable.’ This means that if one of your followers doesn’t see your post on the day you publish it, they’re likely never going to see it. The nature of IG is to keep pushing old content down with new posts.
Before starting Myscentjourney, I was (and still am) an avid follower of several perfume reviewers on blogs, YouTube, and Instagram. I started following them to increase my knowledge of perfumery—not just to learn about new and trendy perfumes, but also about their notes, the noses behind the compositions, etc. One of the main issues I encountered was that all the information is fragmented. Even though some users are very organized within their platforms, the nature of these social networks doesn’t allow for cross-searching like a database would. This results in a lot of content getting lost in digital oblivion. YouTube and blogs are slightly easier to search through Google, but with Instagram, there’s no way to search for specific content. For example, if a friend wants to find my review of Nasomatto’s Black Afgano, even if they know my account is dedicated exclusively to perfumes, the only way they could find it would be to scroll through my feed, hoping the cover photo makes sense. Now, imagine wanting to see not just what Myscentjourney thinks of Black Afgano but also what another reviewer says. The same problem repeats across all reviewers and their platforms.
There’s also another issue: There are many people in the community who have a lot to say and offer. However, because they aren’t ‘good’ Instagrammers or don’t have the time or resources to produce YouTube videos or run a blog, their content gets lost among their few followers.
With this in mind, I wanted to develop a solution to bridge this informational gap within our community, and that’s how the idea for this platform came about.
It’s clear to me that someone can be a perfume expert, an excellent reviewer, or a collector and at the same time be a terrible Instagrammer, YouTuber, etc. There doesn’t need to be a connection between these.
One of my goals is for you to be able to search for a perfume on the platform and find everything related to it: reviews, opinions, unboxings, etc. Additionally, you’ll have information about the brand, the nose behind it, notes, and accords.
You’ll be able to see how the community has voted on key elements like seasonality and the type of event where the perfume excels, gender, day or night, etc. You’ll see who voted for what, with limited votes per user. This way, the statistics will be as real as possible, avoiding fake votes (clearly, no one can vote on a perfume that hasn’t been released!).
Through APIs, you’ll be able to easily import all the perfume-related content you’ve uploaded to different platforms. This way, the community can read or watch your content, regardless of whether they follow you on that specific social network.
