About us

Hello! I’m so glad you found this blog dedicated to perfumes. I want to share a bit more about who I am and how this crazy idea of dedicating myself to perfume reviews came about.

Let’s start from the beginning: my name is Eduardo, I’m 39 years old, and I’m a proud chilango (someone from Mexico City). Ever since I was little, I’ve had a certain obsession with smelling everything (and when I say everything, I mean everything). From the smell of people’s clothes to how clean hands smell versus dirty ones, the scent of my grandparents’ house, and even identifying the unique smell of each of my uncles’ homes (I have 8 uncles). Everyone knew about my keen sense of smell, but they didn’t really think much of it until one day, my “skills” had a practical application with food. I saved several family members from chronic food poisoning thanks to my nose. What’s curious about this is that when others smelled the food, they didn’t notice anything unusual—it wasn’t the typical rotten smell that even someone with anosmia could detect. I’m talking about those subtle changes in the scent of chicken, milk, etc. At this point in the story, you might think I studied perfumery and followed my dream, right? Well, the truth is, I didn’t, because life often takes you down different paths. I studied Industrial Engineering at Tec de Monterrey and started working as a consultant until I was invited to help build a financial startup. After 9 years and earning the role of General Director, I started to reflect on everything I had wanted to do as a child (possibly due to a midlife crisis, ha ha ha). So, at the age of 36, I decided to focus on my passion, and the first step was creating this blog.

To be honest, I’ve been thinking about this project for over three years, but due to a lack of time—and, honestly, fear—I hadn’t dared to start it. As they say: better late than never.

Manifesto

Why the concept of a Signature Perfume (or My Forever Perfume) is Wrong:

Just like you don’t dress the same way you did when you were 15, why do you think your perfume should stay the same? There’s a perfume for every occasion and age.

Explore, Diversify, Live a Little...

There are too many perfumes on the market to be tied to just one. Just like you don’t always order “the same brand of beer” or go to the same restaurant and get the same thing, you shouldn’t do that with perfumes either. There are things in life that force you into just one option, so why not diversify in other areas?

Did you know that perfumes are designed with specific purposes in mind?

Contrary to what you might think, perfumes have specific functions. Just like a linen suit is meant to be worn in the summer heat, citrus and aquatic perfumes are too. That’s why it’s important to think about what situation you're buying for before you make a purchase. Is it for the office? For a night out at the club? There’s an option for every occasion.

Just like you don’t wear the same clothes every day, you shouldn’t wear the same perfume every day.

I get it, you love your jeans—they’re the most comfortable thing you have, and you look cool in them. But that doesn’t mean you’re going to wear them to a wedding. Clothes, like perfumes, have a time and place for when they should be worn.

About the Platform

The main idea behind the @myscentjourney account on Instagram was to leverage the fact that over time I’ve collected more than 900 perfumes, which gave me the opportunity to share my personal experience with each one of them. The concept was simple: every day, post a picture of my collection and share my review in the comments. Sounds easy, right? As I’ve progressed on Instagram, I’ve realized that the content is virtually "perishable." This means that if any of your followers didn’t get a chance to see your post on the day you published it, they most likely won’t see it again. The way Instagram works is by constantly pushing new content, which buries the old content in the feed.

Before starting Myscentjourney, I was (and still am) a dedicated follower of several perfume reviewers on blogs, YouTube, and Instagram. I started following them as a way to expand my knowledge about perfumery—not only to stay updated on new and trendy perfumes but also to learn about their notes, the noses behind the compositions, and more. One of the main problems I encountered is that all this information is fragmented. Although some users maintain great organization within their platforms, the nature of these social networks doesn’t allow for cross-searching like a database would. This causes a lot of content to get lost in the digital oblivion. While YouTube or blogs are still easier to search through Google, if we think about Instagram, there’s no way to search for specific content. For example, if a friend wants to look for the review of Black Afgano by Nasomatto, even though they know my account is dedicated exclusively to perfumes, the only way they can search for it is by scrolling down my feed, and if the cover photo happens to make sense, then they might find it. Now, imagine you want to know not only what Myscentjourney thinks about Black Afgano but also what other reviewers say; the problem repeats itself with each of them and their respective platforms.

Another problem exists: There are many people within the community who have a lot to say and offer. However, due to not being "good" Instagrammers or lacking the time and resources to produce YouTube videos or run a blog, their content remains lost among the few followers they may have.

With this in mind, I wanted to develop a solution to bridge this digital gap within our community, and that’s how the idea for the platform came to life.

A space where all the community’s opinions about a specific perfume could be gathered in one place, along with essential data like Notes, Accords, the Perfumer, Brand, etc. This way, users could search indexed content by any variable: Perfume, Brand, Perfumer, and even Reviewer.

Objectives

Make content from EVERYONE visible, regardless of their follower count on the original platform, since there is NO correlation between post engagement and the quality of the content.

I’m clear that someone can be an expert in perfumes, an excellent reviewer or collector, and still be a terrible Instagrammer, YouTuber, etc. There’s no reason these things should be linked.

Have everything you need in one place.

One of my goals is to make it so you can search for a perfume on the platform and read and/or watch videos about everything related to it: Reviews, Opinions, Unboxings, etc. Additionally, you’ll find information about the Brand, Perfumer, Notes, Accords, and more.

See graphically what people think about a perfume.

You will be able to see how the community has voted on the key elements like: Seasonality and Event Type where the perfume stands out, Gender, Day or Night, etc. You’ll be able to see who voted for what, and there will be a limited vote per user, making the statistics as real as possible and preventing Fake Votes (clearly, you can’t vote on a perfume that hasn’t been released yet!)

Get your content to a wider audience by posting all your social media content in one place.

Through APIs, you’ll easily be able to import all your fragrance-related content from different platforms so the community can read or watch your posts, regardless of whether they follow you on that particular social network.

Close the gap between Brands and Users.

My goal is to encourage brands to provide us with official product information, while we offer our opinions. This way, we can eliminate misinformation about products and have a direct channel for new releases, promotions, and more.
